This How-To guide is about the process of addressing barriers to the education and recruitment of young women from rural areas of Northern Nigeria and empowering them to enter training to become health workers. It translates the lessons learned from the programme into a series of practical, inter-connected steps to guide similar projects and government initiatives in comparably challenging locations.

This guide is for anyone aiming to close a gender gap in service provision and empower women through the process, while also contributing to progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. It is suitable for project and programme staff, development partners and non-governmental organisations.

The guide is made up of five stages;

1.    Engage wider stakeholders
2.    Establishing Foundation Year Programmes
3.    Transforming Training Institutes
4.    Improving College Facilities
5.    Maximizing the empowerment of female students

The guide recommends that strategies to empower rural women and girls are integrated with other approaches from the start at programme design stage. These strategies should include activities that increase gender awareness, build confidence and decision-making power of young women, provide them with financing and  support the governance and financial mechanisms needed to create an enabling environment for progress in the colleges, health sector and community.

While this Guide is focused on health, some elements of the guidance could be valuable for the provision of other social services, such as education and more technical support, such as agriculture and water and sanitation.
